Return to Recent Events

On a very successful business breakfast meeting, hosted by the Bloemfontein Chamber of Commerce and Industry and sponsored by MTN, the CEO for Mangaung 2010 - Mr George Mohlakoana - gave a presentation on this event with specific focus on the following areas:

  • FIFA commercial requirements

  • Stadium

  • Information and Computer Technology

  • Transport

  • Safety and Security

  • Disaster Management, Emergency and other Services

  • Volunteer programme

  • Fan Parks and Public viewing areas

  • Business opportunities

  • 2010 Legacy within Mangaung

Mr Mohlakoana pointed out that 2010 is not for Mangaung only, but for the whole region, Lesotho included. One of the tourism destinations that will form the crux of this development, will be the N8 corridor.

Another opportunity for people to get involved in is the so-called Fan Parks and Public Viewing Areas (where soccer enthusiasts can watch matches on big screens). FIFA has determined that host cities for the 2010 event will be responsible for one Fan Park per city, and that the rest of the Fan Parks will be financed by FIFA accredited organizations. The areas that are been looked at are Hoffman Plain, the gardens in front of the City Hall, the old Racetracks, the Show Grounds and the Mangaung Sport Center in Rocklands.

As far as the Public Viewing Areas, Mr Mohlakoana said that regulations are still been awaited from FIFA. These areas are apparently not under the control of FIFA and can be developed by external parties, although not in the close vicinity of the stadiums.

As far as tourism is concerned, Mr Mohlakoana said that Free State Tourism is working with the South African Tourism authority and the International Marketing Council to develop products and tourism destinations and attractions.

Concern has been raised over the number of beds available for tourists in Bloemfontein as about 25,000 beds will be needed. But, new planning includes 29,000 beds. These will not only be in Bloemfontein, but also in Kimberley, Maseru, Ladybrand, Clarens, Welkom, Kroonstad and Parys. The main challenge will be the grading of these establishments as well as the contracting with Match Hospitality that will supply the hospitality services for the tournament.

Not only contractors, but event organizers, art and culture organizations, transport contractors, security companies, marketing and the services sectors can all gain from this event. It is crucial however to anyone who wants to participate in this event to adhere to the strict regulations set out by FIFA. For more information on this and latest information, please visit

The challenges for Mangaung 2010 are to reach out to local communities and get them involved in the opportunities presented by this event.

A very special word of thanks to MTN’s Natasha Ninneman for helping BCCI stage this event. MTN’s contribution, her commitment and skills, were key to the success of this event.
